Overview

I designed and developed a responsive personal academic website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The goal was to create a clear and professional platform for presenting my academic background, research interests, technical skills, and selected projects.

I approached the website as both a front-end development and UX design project. I organized the content around the information visitors would most likely look for, created a clear navigation structure, and used consistent typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy throughout the site. I also gathered feedback from users and refined the layout, content, and navigation based on usability issues they identified.

The problem

Academic information is often distributed across résumés, documents, professional profiles, and project files. This can make it difficult for visitors to quickly understand a person’s background, skills, research interests, and experience.

The challenge was to organize this information into one coherent website while maintaining clear navigation, readable content, visual consistency, and a professional academic identity.

Research and discovery

I reviewed academic portfolios and personal websites to understand common content structures, navigation patterns, and presentation styles. I also asked users to explore the website and identify areas where the content, navigation, or visual hierarchy felt unclear.

The solution

Create a responsive and accessible academic website that allows visitors to quickly understand my background, explore my projects, and find relevant information without navigating through dense or disconnected content.

Reflection

This project helped me understand how front-end development and UX design work together. Building the website with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript strengthened my technical skills, while user feedback showed me that a functional website is not automatically an intuitive one.

I learned to pay closer attention to navigation labels, content hierarchy, readability, responsive behaviour, and consistency across screen sizes. Iterating on these areas helped me create a clearer and more usable academic website while developing a more user-centred approach to coding and interface design.
